Get to know your caravan

Share article

You’ve just picked up your new caravan and are excited to hit the road, but it’s important to take some time familiarising yourself with your new van before you head on an extended trip. We encourage all of our customers to take a maiden trip that is somewhere close by to become familiar and comfortable with the operation of your new van and ensure everything is in good working order.

Reasons to take a local maiden trip

  • Towing a caravan adds another element to your holiday, particularly if it’s your first time towing. Towing a van or camper can be challenging and changes the way your vehicle performs, so it’s a good idea to become comfortable and confident towing your new van and a local trip on familiar roads will allow this.
  • When you picked up your new caravan and went through the handover process, there was a lot of information to take in and it can be hard to recall everything when the time comes. The maiden trip gives you the opportunity to educate yourself on your caravan’s features and how they operate.
  • A short local trip is great preparation for future holidays as you can work out what you need to pack and what accessories you may need to make your holiday more enjoyable.
  • Like any new product there may be unexpected issues and this maiden trip will give you the chance to take note of them and consult with us to rectify them. It’s better to have any potential issues resolved while you are staying close by, rather than in a remote area somewhere in Australia.
  • You can take the time to create checklists for future holidays; such as packing lists, pre-trip and departure checklists.
  • Meet like minded people also staying in the caravan park, who are often a friendly bunch and are more than happy to share travelling trips with you.

More than likely your maiden trip will be smooth sailing, but if you find any issues that are a concern, Avan Adelaide is close by and can easily be contacted on 82618442.

Towing Weights: What You Need To Know

Share article

You’ve decided to buy a caravan for the first time, but are completely overwhelmed with towing weights? Don’t worry you wont be the first as it can get a little confusing understanding what you can legally tow and how to calculate your maximum towing capacity.

The caravan and car manufacturers set the towing weights and these limits are determined by the vehicles design and how they are built, which is critical in the safe operation of these vehicles. Before buying a caravan it’s important to understand towing weights and what they mean to you. It’s your legal responsibility to ensure you don’t exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity and these laws are in place to keep everyone on the roads safe.

Understanding the towing weight limits

You might already know your car’s towing weights, but do you know what they really mean? For starters, we suggest you get to know the different weight limits and educate yourself on the towing terminology. To take some of the confusion out of this, we recommend getting to know the following three essential ones.

Tare Weight Or Mass

The Tare Mass is the weight of the caravan as supplied by the manufacturer and when it’s empty. This means no water or gas in the tanks or any of your possessions. Also keep in mind that if you add upgrades to your van you need to take these into consideration and calculate how much extra weight these will add. Your caravan dealer can help with this.

ATM – Aggregrated Trailer Mass

This is a simple one to measure; it’s the maximum weight your caravan is able to weigh with everything packed and ready to go. The ATM is set by the manufacturer and cannot be exceeded, so it’s critical that you check this weight before heading off on your holiday.

The difference between the Tare Mass & ATM is the amount you can load into your caravan; this is called your maximum payload.

Tow Ball Weight

Tow Ball Weight is the amount of weight that is exerted on the tow ball when the van is fully loaded. This is a crucial safety factor as towing with a tow ball weight higher than the vehicle’s maximum capacity can reduce the contact of the front wheels on the road, which will affect the vehicles performance.

Where can I find this information?

Now that you have more of an understanding of the essential towing weights, you may be thinking where to find these?

For your tow vehicle, you can find them under the towing section of the vehicles manufacturers handbook. If you have trouble finding these weights we recommend calling your vehicles manufacturer to get the correct information, as it is your legal responsibility to know the maximum towing limits. Also all caravans and campers must display their weights on their VIN plates.

Once you have the right information for your car we can help you choose the right van. Avan design and build lightweight caravans that are super strong, and we sell a wide range of caravans and campers to suit most cars.

For further information on towing weights or to find out what caravans or campers your car can tow, call our team on 08 8261 8442 or head into our dealership at 494 North East Rd, Windsor Gardens.

Strong, lightweight & affordable

Golf approaches the off road caravans question in a more realistic and responsible way, with a strong tradition of building high quality versatile caravans and campers suitable for off highway conditions. With many years experience in designing and building tough caravans and campers for the adventurer, Golf currently have a range of recreation vehicles that allow you to be self sufficient for longer, giving you easier access to more remote locations.

REASONS TO CONSIDER GOLF OFF ROAD CARAVANS OR CAMPERS

Most consider off road caravans as they are constantly bombarded by sales pitch and hype that they are required to explore our wonderful country, in some rare cases those remarks are true, but for most a well built caravan with good ground clearance, articulating couplings and independent suspension will do the job.

Golf campers and caravans are lightweight, strong and extremely good value for money. Take a look at some of the reasons why you should consider Golf first.

– Built using Avan developed Vaculite TM walls – makes their vans strong, light weight, highly insulated and flexible without causing structural damage. You will enjoy the benefits of towing a lighter van and will save on reduced fuel costs. Plus your holiday will be more comfortable during the extreme warmer and cooler months with R6 rated insulation.

– Centurion Chassis – an Australian made 6 inch double hot dipped galvanised Australian steel chassis, that comes with larger jockey wheel and drop down stabiliser legs, giving the van superior strength and durability.

– ALKO trailing arm suspension – engineered, manufactured and tested in Australia to suit challenging conditions.  Standard with locally manufactured king springs and heavy duty shock absorbers that last over 100,000 compressions on tests, maintenance free bushes with camber and toe in adjustments. ALKO suspension has superior strength and allows you to take your caravan or camper confidently through off road environments.  Importantly there is reduced shock transferred to the body structure and interior fit out with less wear and tear on moving components.

– Solar Panels with DC/DC charger – only good quality solar panels are installed with solar regulator and battery protection enabling you to be off grid with a self generating power source.

– Security door – for extra security with cut proof fly screen and separating glass door for increased air flow without the bugs, this is proven to be essential when bush camping.

– Slide out kitchen and Dometic fridge – the convenience to cook and entertain outside, keeping smells, mess and heat outside your caravan.

– Gas/Electric hot water with outside shower – delivering hot water anywhere. Just because you are heading off road doesn’t mean you can’t have the luxury of hot water for showers or cleaning.

– Inside/outside speakers with stereo – it’s not always about the practical features! Your ability to play music or keeping up with local news adds to your holiday enjoyment and safety.

– Thule wind out awning –  a fully enclosed and protected awning that is set up in matter of seconds providing shade from the hot midday sun allowing you to enjoy more of your holiday.

Before you consider purchasing an off road caravan, consider Golf… Strong, lightweight and affordable! To inspect and discuss the features of these impressive vans first hand, visit Avan Adelaide at 494 North East Rd, Windsor Gardens. Alternatively you can visit our website for further information.

*NOTE: Extra care must be taken to drive responsibly to the conditions faced on unsealed roads, as damage caused by negligence, tyre pressures and destructive road conditions are not covered under the two year warranty.

Feel comfortable with your new caravan

Share article

Purchasing a caravan can be a daunting experience as there is so much choice in the market these days, plus it’s a huge financial investment.  You can often be left feeling a little uneasy and apprehensive with your new purchase.

Before you start visiting dealerships we suggest to work out what your needs are, where you want to travel and what features you would like included.  Also it’s a good idea to spend some time researching online to find out about the different models and options that are available.

There are a few things your dealer can offer to help ease your concerns, so you can drive away with complete confidence.

Consultation

It’s essential to have a thorough consultation with your dealer so they can recommend the right van for you.  Together you should discuss how you will use the van, how many people it needs to sleep, where you will be travelling, what is your vehicle’s towing capacity and so on.  Only when they have a clear understanding of your requirements should they recommend a product for you.

RVMAP Accredited Dealer

Buying from an RVMAP accredited dealer can help you feel secure and confident that you have purchased a quality product.  Accredited dealers/manufacturers adhere to the Australian RV manufacturing standards that are set by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia.  For more information about this accreditation visit Accredited Caravan Dealer.

Warranty

If you are buying a new or demo RV, ensure that a warranty period is included and you understand the conditions of this warranty.  Teething problems can occur with new caravans, so it’s important you are protected against any manufacturing faults or parts failure.  Our new and demo caravans come with a 2 year warranty and used vans over $10,000 have a 3 months warranty included.

Thorough Handover

Some of your apprehension with your new purchase may come from feeling unsure how to operate the caravan and it’s features.  You should be offered a thorough handover to show you the ins and outs of your new RV.  Our handovers take around one and a half hours, where we show the customer how to operate all features and appliances.  Once the van is safely hooked up to the customer’s car, we take them for a drive to make sure it is towing correctly and the brake controller is set to the correct setting.  Your dealer should be happy to spend as much time with you as needed to ensure you drive away 100% capable and informed.

Safe Towing Course

Towing a van can be challenging at first and it’s essential to learn a few basic skills to help you tow safely and with confidence.  If this is your first time buying an RV, we recommend completing a safe towing course before you head away on holiday.

Buying from a dealer who is willing to invest time in helping you make the right purchase will pay off in the end, as you will drive away feeling confident and secure.

If you are ready to begin your RV journey why not take a look at caravan sales adelaide to see what we currently have available. For further information on buying a caravan, camper or motorhome feel free to call our sales team on 08 8261 8442 and they’ll be more than happy to help you.

Tips To Help You Caravan Safely

Share article

When travelling with your caravan or camper you need to take extra caution to prevent accidents on the road.  Before you head off on your holiday, it’s important to plan ahead and be prepared.

To help keep you safe on the roads, we have put together some helpful tips:

  • Ensure your caravan has been serviced before heading off on holiday and checks have been carried out for gas leaks and electrical issues.  If you have a break away brake system fitted make sure it’s battery is fully charged.
  • Inspect tyres carefully and make sure they are inflated to the correct pressure.  Tyres not only wear out they also age. Tyres that look okay for tread can delaminate due to age causing serious damage to your caravan or camper.
  • Check that the couplings and safety chains are correctly connected and securely fastened.
  • Ensure the brake and light connections are secure and all lights work.
  • Check that the wheel nuts on both your vehicle and caravan are tightened to the manufacturers specifications.
  • Make one or two test stops to check that the brakes are working properly.
  • Adjust the mirrors to make sure you have a good view of the road behind your caravan.
  • Check the awning is stored away and locked in the travel position. Remember to store away in wind and never leave your caravan unattended with the awning out.
  • While you are travelling ensure that the gas cylinders are turned off and the refrigerator door is locked.
  • Do not overload your caravan or camper.  You can check the ATM limit on the compliance plate and if unsure check your weight at a weigh bridge.  Ball weight is also imperative as this may cause damage to the towing vehicle and cause an accident if exceeded.

Towing a caravan changes the way your car will perform, so it’s important to take extra care when caravanning.  Here are some tips to keep in mind when towing your caravan or camper.

  • Towing a caravan decreases the acceleration and braking ability so it’s important to be aware of this. Ensure there is more space between you and the vehicle in front, to allow for a longer stopping distance. Overtaking safely requires more time and distance.
  • Accelerate, brake and steer your caravan smoothly to avoid caravan sway.  This is especially important in wet and slippery conditions.
  • If the caravan starts to sway avoid applying the brakes. If you experience sway use the hand control on your brake controller as this will stabilise your caravan.
  • Where possible pull over to allow other vehicles to overtake.  Keep to the left and give overtaking vehicles space to pass safely.
  • Take extra care when driving in poor conditions, high winds or passing larger vehicles.  Slow down to reduce swaying of your caravan.
  • Reversing a caravan can be difficult so practicing before hand is essential. Reversing with a person guiding you outside the vehicle is very helpful.
  • Load your caravan correctly to reduce the chance of sway.
  • Towing a caravan can cause additional stress when driving so plan lots of rest stops to avoid fatigue.

Following a few checks and balances and keeping a clear head while travelling in your caravan will help keep you and your family safe on the roads.

For any further information on caravan safety feel free to send an enquiry or call us on 08 8261 8442 to talk to one of our staff.
