Do I Need a Weight Distribution Hitch When Towing My Caravan?

Share article

One of the most common questions we get asked is do I need a weight distribution hitch when towing my caravan?

To safely tow your van we recommend using one, especially when travelling long distances. Put simply, a weight distribution hitch (or load leveller) evenly distributes the load over the van and towing vehicle, maximising safety, stability and control.

IMPORTANCE OF A WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION HITCH

When you tow your caravan or camper, extra weight is added to the rear of the tow vehicle. This causes an imbalance of weight from the front to the rear and changes the way your vehicle handles. This weight imbalance can cause serious safety concerns, especially when travelling at high speeds.

With less weight over the front axle, your car’s braking efficiency and steering control is reduced and your car can lose control. This weight imbalance can also cause your headlamps to be thrown out of alignment and you may find fuel use and tyre wear increases. Weight Distribution Hitches have been designed to address these problems as they restore an even balance across all axles of the vehicle and caravan

HOW DO WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION HITCHES WORK?

WDH’S work by changing the point at which the load of the trailer is transferred to the vehicle. Normally, the entire towball weight of the van is transferred and carried at the tow ball. When fitted, these hitches correct this by creating a lever that spreads the weight evenly across all axles of the vehicle and van.  It’s important to note that when using WDH’s the ball weight remains the same.

Spreading the weight allows your vehicle and caravan to be level, reducing sway and ensuring you have complete control when towing.

HAYMAN REESE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION HITCHES

There are many weight distribution kits available on the market, but we tend to recommend Hayman Reese. Like most, they have been designed to ensure your towing vehicle operates at its best when it comes to braking, steering and general driving – keeping you safer on the roads.

Choosing the right system for you is easy with Hayman Reese’s three simple steps.

  1. Find out the ball weight of your caravan.
  2. Locate the position of the coupling on the A-frame – it’s either the top, middle or bottom.
  3. Measure you’re A-frame depth. Shallow = 4 inch, mid sized = 5 inch or large = 6 inch.
  4. Take the Hayman Reese Quiz to determine the right kit for you.

Our parts team are authorised distributors for Hayman Reese and are happy to help you determine what weight distribution hitch is best for you. For any information on towing your caravan safely you can contact them on 08 8266 5779.

How To Keep Your Caravan Safe – A guide to Caravan Security

Share article

The last thing you want on your holiday is to have your much loved van or belongings stolen. With over 500 RV’s being stolen in Australia each year, it’s important to keep your investment secure and take sensible steps to keep your caravan safe. Following our caravan security tips will help prevent thieves targeting your RV and belongings.

Be Security conscious

When on holiday it’s all too easy to forget about security, which can put you at risk of theft.  It’s important to be just as security conscious when on holiday as you are at home. Take the time to secure your rig and possessions. Whether you are free camping or in a caravan park you need to make it as difficult as possible for a thief to steal your van. The harder you make it for them to steal, the less likely they will try.

Start with the basics, check your window and door locks are in working order and always locked whenever you leave. Keep your valuables out of sight and your blinds closed when away from your van. And when leaving your site remember to always pack away anything of value. For money or jewellery we would recommend the fitting of a small safe.

Store Your Caravan Securely

When you’re not using your rig, security still needs to be top of mind. Leaving your van in your driveway without protection is an opening for it to be stolen. The best place to store your van is in a garage or behind a fence that can be locked.  That’s not always possible and investing in additional security products can help deter thieves.

Another option is to choose a local RV storage facility, where you pay a monthly fee to keep your caravan safe and secure. ACR offer caravan storage in their secure yard for a small monthly fee.

Invest in Caravan Security Products

There are excellent security products available to help prevent and deter thieves. Investing in one or two of these products is wise.

  • Coupling Locks

Coupling locks are a visible product that works well to deter a thief from stealing your property. They are a cheap solution, easy to use and should be your first step in preventing theft. This simple and convenient product prevents others from hooking up your RV and driving away. It works by locking over the coupling to prevent the coupling latch being lifted and keeps the hitch and receiver locked together. This method is not 100% secure as the locks can be removed. However that takes time and most often proves to be a great deterrent.

  • Wheel Clamps

Wheel clamps are a brilliant anti-theft device! They work simply by making your van immobile as they prevent the wheels from turning. Wheel clamps are an instant visual deterrent to thieves, adding that extra layer of security to your rig. Just like coupling locks, they can also be removed so they are not 100% secure. But once again that takes time, making them an excellent deterrent

  • Security Screen door

RV security starts at the door! To protect your valuables it’s important to invest in a security door that has been designed with safety in mind. Security doors gives you that additional protection while holidaying by increasing security at the entry point.

Anti-Theft System with GPS Tracker

The ideal level of security comes from an anti-theft system with GPS tracking. An excellent way to protect your rig and help locate and recover it if it does get stolen. Our recommendation is the WITI anti-theft system. With its GPS tracking functionality and mobile alerts in the event of theft, it’s one of the best on the market.

Plus this revolutionary anti-theft system is designed specifically for caravans and is fitted with electric brakes. If the caravan is hitched or moved slightly while WITI is active, the brakes will be applied, lights will flash and the alarm sounded. WITI is more than a deterrent. It is the only anti-theft system that totally immobilises your van, making it impossible to tow. For more information or installation of this product our parts team can help you out.

Your van is your home away from home, filled with your much loved possessions and memories, so it’s well worth investing in these security measures. Purchasing comprehensive RV insurance to cover your large investment and contents is highly recommended.

How Avan Build Lightweight Caravans

Share article

There’s no denying that lightweight caravans have major benefits, no matter what vehicle you use to tow. This means many people are searching for the ultimate lightweight vans in the market. With better fuel economy and ease of towing, you can see how these vans are the popular choice.

If you are looking for a van with a lower tare weight, you might be mistaken to think you need to compromise on space and comfort. This is not the case with Avan Caravans. Their light weight vans are cleverly designed from start to finish to offer maximum comfort and strength, without the weight. Built using the latest technology available in the industry, Avan manufacture RV’s with lower tare and ball weights compared to many other manufacturers.

It all starts with the Avan Advantage

From the start Avan had a simple goal –  to build lightweight vans with all the comfort and convenience needed for caravanning, that are easily towed, all at an affordable price. And that goal hasn’t changed!

Avan is the second largest manufacturer of RV’s in Australia and have been leaders in Australian made vans for over 28 years. The main difference with Avan is their focus on modern and technically advanced construction methods. Their unique smooth solid wall construction provides superior strength and thermal protection, without the weight and delivers you a lighter van to tow. In fact, comparable vans from other manufacturers using old build methods can weigh up to 400kg more.

Next comes the lightweight but incredibly strong centurion chassis that is unique to Avan. Avan caravans and campers are built on this durable Centurion chassis, providing superior support for your RV. Intelligent design reduces the weight of the chassis, whilst maintaining maximum strength and corrosion resistance. This centurion chassis is made for Avans, so you can feel confident you are getting a consistently high quality build from the ground up.

To build lighter caravans and motorhomes it’s not just about the construction, it begins with well thought out planning and design. Avan pride themselves on designing RV’s with smart layouts and features to maximise space and comfort but without the weight. Even more importantly, consideration is put into every aspect of the van’s layout, including furniture placement to ensure equal weight distribution throughout the van.  Furnishing vans with specialised light weight furniture made from composite materials is once again another way to reduce the weight where possible.

Visit Avan Adelaide To See The Difference

Believe it or not, buying a lightweight van doesn’t mean you have to settle for less. There’s no need to compromise on space, comfort or any much wanted features. Plus you can feel confident that your Avan is built incredibly tough and ready for adventure.

Avan Adelaide, a leading dealer of caravans in Adelaide, has been partnered with Avan for 15 years and are proud to be the only authorised dealer in SA. Let our team walk you through an Avan for you to see first hand why they are the best choice.

How To Rent Out Your Motorhome and Earn Extra Money

Share article

Renting out your motorhome is a great way to earn some extra income.  Already own your RV or looking to buy one for the first time, then renting it out can help cover the costs of your investment.

Motorhomes are the ideal way to explore this beautiful country, with the freedom and convenience to travel at your own pace, whilst still enjoying your home comforts. In my opinion, RV trips are the only way to see Australia! Aussies love to take road trips and now more than ever local holidays are on the rise. So there is definitely a demand for rentals.

1. How does renting out your motorhome work?

Renting out your mobile home is made easier with well established companies like Camplify and Camptoo. There are many trusted sites available and these sharing platforms offer an easier and safer way to manage your rentals.  To get up to speed, we recommend calling each one to discuss their guidelines, inclusions and costs. These marketplaces are excellent at providing owners with a simple and secure place to list their RV. Not to mention they have the right audience, thousands of people searching to find their perfect rental.

Of course you have the choice to rent privately and sites like Gumtree and Facebook are good places to start.

2. Benefits of hiring out my motorhome

  • Earn some extra money – Without a doubt the main benefit is the extra income you can earn. Your motorhome can make you money in between your holidays, instead of sitting around collecting dust.  Today’s sharing platforms make it simple for you to make money. Recouping the costs of purchasing and running your RV, turns owning the motorhome into an investment.
  • No Storage Fees –  Not only can you make money, but think about the costs you can save, such as storage fees.
  • Meet New People – Whether you are purchasing your first RV or already own one, you most likely appreciate the RV lifestyle. Renting out yours will allow you to meet new people and even introduce this exciting world to others who have never experienced it before.

3. What about insurance?

Before you hire out your RV, make sure you have the right insurance to protect you and your investment. You have options when it comes to hire insurance. Firstly you can organise your own rental insurance. CIL insurance offers an excellent Hire Cover insurance to protect you against loss or damage with the addition of legal liability cover. Or if you use one of the sharing platforms, check out their comprehensive insurance solutions.

4. Is this really for me?

Obviously, this is not for everyone. Hiring out your mobile home doesn’t work for all,  but if you like the idea of making some extra money when you’re not using it, then why not give it a go.  If there are times of the year when you’re not travelling and you feel comfortable trusting strangers in your motorhome, then this could be for you. If this is new to you, it’s best to use one of the sharing platforms where each renter is checked and has a profile with reviews. At the end of the day you get to choose who rents your investment, so always go with your gut feeling.

5. Ultimate travelling experience

Not all RV’s are built the same and if you are going to rent out yours then it’s important to buy one that is built well and going to last the distance. Avan Ovations deliver the ultimate travelling experience with luxurious living accommodation and more features included standard. You’ll be impressed with the Ovation and they’ll be a dream for anyone who hires one out.

If you are considering buying a mobile home to rent out, make sure you take a look at Avan’s range. Avan Adelaide are the experts in motorhomes Adelaide and here to help.

Quick and Easy Caravan Checks Before You Head Off

Share article

You’ve planned your caravan trip and are all packed ready to go! Before you head off on your caravan journey, take the time to complete some simple checks to avoid common safety mistakes. Having a pre-trip checklist to work through before setting off is the best way to make sure nothing is forgotten. Follow these quick and easy pre-trip checks to keep safe on the roads.

Caravan Is Packed & Loaded Correctly

Before you hit the road make sure your van is loaded correctly. A poorly packed or overloaded caravan is an accident waiting to happen. Not to mention it’s your legal responsibility to ensure you don’t exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity. An uneven loaded van will affect the tow ball load, increase your fuel usage, place added strain to your car and ultimately impact your safety when towing.

  • Pack majority of the weight over the van’s axles.
  • While travelling store the heaviest items on the floor close to the centre.
  • Store only light items in the overhead cupboards. Storing heavier items higher up can affect the caravan’s centre of gravity.
  • Avoid packing heavy items behind the axle.

As mentioned, it’s your responsibility to make sure you don’t exceed your vehicle and caravan’s towing weights. If you are new to caravanning, we suggest pack the car prior to your trip and head to your closest weighbridge to weigh your van and check the ball weight. In fact we recommend revisiting the weighbridge from time to time to check your weights.

Outside Caravan Checks

Before you head off complete a pre-trip check on the outside of your van to check everything is in working order and to make sure you haven’t missed anything.

  • Inspect the tyres for wear and make sure the tyre pressures are correct to manufacturer specifications, this includes the spare.
  • Check the wheel nuts and use a torque wrench to make sure they are tightened to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Make sure the electrical plug is connected and operating.
  • Test that the brake lights, clearance lights, tail lights and indicators are working.
  • Ensure the coupling and safety chains are fastened correctly and operating.
  • Check that the awning is packed away and locked securely into the travel position.
  • Towing mirrors, weight distribution, brake controllers and rear view cameras all fitted correctly and operational.
  • Make sure your vehicle’s brakes engage and release.
  • Power leads and hoses have been packed away.
  • Wind up and secure the stabilizer legs.

Secure Inside Your Van

You’ve loaded the van but now it’s time to fasten everything securely to avoid damage and a potential mess inside your van.

  • Cupboard doors, drawers, fridge door, roof hatches and windows are closed and locked.
  • Remove the plate from the microwave.
  • Make sure the gas and electrics are switched off.
  • TV is removed from bracket and stored securely. Plus the TV antenna is down.
  • Secure any loose items in the van.
  • Table is set to travel position.

Knowledge Of Your Destination

Australia has many remote and rugged places and it’s essential for your enjoyment and more importantly safety that you are prepared. Whether you are new to caravanning or an experienced camper, we always recommend finding out about your destination and what the travel conditions will be like. This will allow you to plan and pack the right items, so you don’t get yourself into any unexpected trouble.

Final Walk Around

Take a  final walk around the van before you head off every time to make sure you haven’t missed anything. Create yourself a pre-trip checklist and following the same routine each time is the best way to make sure you don’t miss anything. Even experienced caravanners can miss things and that’s when damage can happen or people can get hurt.

Need some service and maintenance advice before heading off? Our caravan workshop has a team of experienced technicians who are on hand to help. If this is your first adventure in your new van, we also encourage our customers to take a maiden trip somewhere close by to become familiar and comfortable with your van. For expert advice on caravan sales in Adelaide our team is more than happy to share our advice and experience.

5 Key Things You Need To Know Before Buying a Caravan

Share article

If you’re like most people, you probably have been thinking about purchasing a caravan to start travelling at home. It’s no secret that Aussies love to travel and with international travel off the cards for some time, local holidays are the answer. What’s even better, here in South Australia our travel restrictions have already been lifted, meaning travel is back on.

So you have decided to buy an RV, where do you go from here? With so many brands and options available, the process can feel somewhat overwhelming and naturally you may feel anxious.  Buying an RV is no small investment and not one to be taken lightly. The really good news though is when equipped with the right information and knowledge you can feel confident and excited to make the best choice for you.

Get started today with Caravan Sales Adelaide: 5 Key Things You Need To Know Before Buying an RV.

Understand your vehicle’s towing capacity

First off, if you are keeping your current vehicle for towing you need to research its towing capacity, as this dictates the size of van you can purchase. Manufacturers set the towing weights and limits based on the vehicle’s design and how they are built, which means it’s critical to not exceed these limits for safety. Did you know that it’s your legal responsibility to ensure you don’t exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity and these laws are in place to keep us all safe on the roads.

Know your vehicle’s towing weight and ball weight before you set off looking for a van. Once you have this information an experienced sales consultant will be able to help you choose the right van.

Consider your budget & Financing

Let’s be honest we all wish we had an unlimited budget to purchase our dream van, unfortunately that’s most likely not the case. It’s essential to set your budget in advance so you are clear on what is affordable for your family. Of course you could always choose to pay for the van through finance, provided that is within your means. Caravan finance can be sourced through your own contacts or often dealerships have preferred finance companies they can recommend.

Questions to ask yourself

To begin it’s important to understand why you want the caravan. Ask yourself questions like how will you be using the van and what kind of places will you be travelling to?  You may not have all the answers at the start and that’s okay. Naturally, everyone has different reasons for buying an RV and taking the time to discover how you’ll be using the van will help you choose the right one.

Get the ball rolling with these questions:

  • How many people will the van need to sleep? Do you need a family caravan?
  • How often will we be travelling in our van and for how long?
  • Where will we be taking our van? Will it need to be off road capable?
  • What can my current vehicle tow? Will I need to upgrade my car?
  • Where will the RV be stored?
  • Will I be free camping or mostly staying in caravan parks?

In addition to these questions, sit down and make a list of features that are important to you. You see there are stacks of features that can be included but making a list of what’s important to you will also help with choosing the right van. For some people an ensuite is essential and for others they are happy to go without. Once again, the features that you want will be dependent on how you intend to use your van.

You probably already know some caravanners, so another suggestion is to chat with them for ideas and experiences. You may not have all the answers at the start, but taking the time to get an understanding of your needs will inevitably help you choose the right size, layout and type of van.

Begin your research – knowledge is power

Research is inevitable when buying an RV. In fact it’s one of the most important parts of the buying cycle. With the internet at our fingertips, we are lucky as this takes the hard work out of researching new products. Before you set off to some dealerships, we suggest you spend some time researching  different brands and types of RV’s currently on the market. You might be quite surprised how many have popped up over the last few years. A good place to start is Google reviews. Get a feel for the brand and their products through these reviews. However remember that there are always going to be some people who like to complain, so try not to focus on the one or two bad reviews in a sea of good.

Once you have a shortlist of local dealerships, make a day to go out and visit them to see what they have on offer.

Buy from a reputable brand & dealer

It’s a fact of life,  like with all industries, there are some brands and dealers that let industry down. You’ve probably heard negative stories about people buying lemons and it’s true this can happen. This makes buying from a reputable brand and dealership even more important. You’ll benefit from choosing a brand that has many years experience in the industry and employ knowledgeable staff. To make your selection easier we recommend buying from a dealer accredited from the Caravan Industry Association of Australia.  This means the vans are manufactured to comply with Australian design rules, standards and safety regulations.

Most importantly remember to enjoy the experience of purchasing either your first caravan or upgrading to a new one. This is an exciting time ahead and new adventures are about to begin.

Dear valued customers,

At Avan Adelaide, our top priority is always serving and protecting our customers and employees. We seek to provide a safe environment for our customers and our team members and in times such as these, we understand that it is our responsibility to do our best to ensure we keep our customers and employees safe and healthy.

We wanted to share some of the things we’re doing to ensure everyone who enters our dealership or works with us is safe, as well as doing our part in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

We value the health and well-being of our customers and team members and are following the advice from the Australian Government and World Health Organisation (WHO) to help minimise the spread of the virus.

  • In addition to our regular cleaning, we have commenced increased cleaning and sanitisation in our dealership.
  • All staff have been briefed on safer cleaning practices and personal hygiene to reduce spread of the virus.
  • We have requested team members displaying cold and flu like symptoms to refrain from coming to work until cleared by doctor.
  • We are following all social distancing recommendations. Please don’t be offended if we seen unfriendly, the health and safety of our customers and team members are our top priority.

At this stage, it’s business as usual for our dealership and we remain open. For the safety of all of our customers and team members, we ask that if you have had contact within the last 14 days with someone who has travelled overseas or you feel unwell, please do not visit our dealership during that period. Our stock is updated regularly on our website, so feel free to browse avanadelaide.com.au or call our sales team on 08 8261 8442.

Due to disruption of international travel, maybe it is a good time to consider visiting spectacular locations in Australia and support bush fire affected regions.  As a reminder Avan Adelaide offer a hassle free guaranteed buy back option for all caravans, campers and motorhomes.

Over the coming weeks we will continue to monitor the situation closely and act quickly on the advice of Australian Government and World Health Organisation.
